Japan Overall

The country of Japan is located east of china and consists of an archipelago that contains 4 main islands and thousands of other smaller ones. The islands Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku have varying geography and weather. Overall, the land is very mountainous and the temperature is warm and humid.

Hokkaido

Hokkaido is the most northern island and has a cold climate. The average temperature annually is a low 10 degrees celsius. Especially during winter, it gets very cold and there is heavy snowfall. It is located very close to Russia, and is surrounded by The Sea of Japan, Sea of Okhotsk, and the Pacific Ocean. Fun Fact: This section of Japan is known for its Ramen!

Honshu

The island of Honshu has the highest population and extends through most of Japan. It has a mild and humid climate and is very mountainous and volcanic. Honshu experiences frequent earthquakes and tsunamis and many are devastating. This region also contains Japan's highest mountain Mt. Fuji.

Shikoku

Shikoku is a much smaller island compared to Honshu. It sits right underneath Honshu and it is very mountainous. Unlike all other major islands, Shikoku does not have any volcanoes. Many forest are in Shikoku and many industries and companies have taken advantage of it. There are mild winters with temperatures much lower than Hokkaido, helping it to grow crops out of season.

Kyushu

The island of Kyushu is the most southern island out of the 4 major ones that make up Japan. It contains many rivers making it famous for its white-water rafting. It is also very mountainous and contains Japan’s most active volcano. There is also a lot of tectonic activity and many hot springs.

Influence

As Japan is a very mountainous country and rich in soil because of volcanic activity, agriculture is very popular. There is approximately 2 million farmers in the country. As it is also an archipelago, Japan is fully surrounded by water. As a result, the fishing industry is very big and japanese people’s diet consist of fish. Ultimately, Japan's geography influences the people's diets, jobs, and overall culture which includes things such as activities.
